Jewell (Franklin) Cox

Jewell (Franklin) Cox was born on August 15, 1921, in Tulsa, OK to George Reuben & Ada Pearl (Atkinson) Franklin. She passed from this life on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, in Stillwater, OK, at the age of 92 years, 4 months, & 24 days.

Jewell attended elementary school at Iron Post near Locust Grove & graduated from Locust Grove High School in 1940. On August 8, 1943, in Siloam Springs, AR, Jewell Franklin & Jasper “Junior” Cox were united in marriage. “Junior” preceded his wife in death on December 21, 1994. The couple had been married for over 51 years.

Jewell lived in the Iron Post area for over 65 years. For the past 18 months, she had resided in Stillwater to be near her daughter. She had worked at Amerado Petroleum Corporation in Tulsa, the Ration Office in Pryor, & Country Cottage over the years & retired from Mid-America Yarn Mills in Pryor. She was very involved with the First Baptist Church of Locust Grove. There, she taught the “Naomi” class for over 40 years, worked with the “Women on Missions” for several years, taught Sunday School & served on the funeral dinner committee for many years. Jewell enjoyed helping with Bible School & was involved in fundraising for the Baptist Children’s Home Fund.

She enjoyed reading & studying her Bible. Jewell had a fondness for collecting rocks & Indian Art. She enjoyed traveling & time spent tending to her flowers & garden. She spent numerous hours crocheting & sewing & loved her pug “Bitsy” dearly. Jewell was known to be a great cook & would take the time to gather walnuts to make walnut cakes. She lived her life to the fullest, always living a Christian life, & was never afraid to have fun. She was compassionate in every way, with her time, money, & food. Jewell loved God with all her heart & lived her life with joy & character.

She is survived by: 2 sons: Gary Alan Cox & Douglas Wayne Cox; 1 daughter: Mary Etta Jafek & husband David; 10 grandchildren: Michael Cox & wife Courtney, Paige McAlister & husband Logan, Mark Cox, Erin Cox, Bailey Cox, Jenny Jafek-Jones & husband Matt Lorenz, April Cox, Glory Talbott & husband Jason, Crystal Kazama & husband Kosei, & Benjamin Cox; 13 great grandchildren: Tate Cox, Jax Cox, Emma Cox, Seren Jones, Emma Lorenz, Abby Lorenz, Syris Norelli, Melody Talbott, Harmony Talbott, Kiyomi Kazama, Shohei Kazama, Asuka Kazama, & Elizabeth Cox; numerous other relatives, church family, & a host of friends.

Jewell was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband: Jasper "Junior" Cox; 1 infant son; & 1 grandson: John Jafek.

Funeral services were held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Locust Grove. Reverend James Duffell officiated. Interment followed at McClain Cemetery near Locust Grove.
