| Asberry A. Saffell July 4, 1916 - June 19, 2001 |

| Services for Asberry A. Saffell, 84, of
Locust Grove, were held Friday, June 22, 2001, at 10am in
the Chouteau Church of God. Rev. Greg Garvie, Rev. Odell
Vanderburg, and Pastor Floyd Saffell officiated, with
interment following in Hogan Cemetery. Services were
under the direction of the Locust Grove Funeral Home. Mr. Saffell was born July 4, 1916, in Murphy, Oklahoma, to Marion Alphaeus and Grace Pearl Luckinbill Saffell . He grew up in the Murphy area and attended schools in Murphy and Locust Grove. He married Clara Christine Miller on May 25, 1942, in Pryor. He entered the US Army on September 24, 1941, and served as cook for the Battery "A" 291st Field Artillery Observation Batallion. A Veteran of World War II, he served 20 months in the European Theater, including campaigns at Normandy, Ardennes Rhineland, Northern France, and Central Europe. His decorations included the Bronze Star, EAME Service Ribbon and Silver Service Star, American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge. He was honorably discharged a Technician 4th Class on October 19, 1945. After his years of service, he and Clara raised their family in the Murphy and Locust Grove area. He worked as a carpenter and also did quite a bit of farming. Asberry loved music, and he was a talented mandolin player. He enjoyed playing at church functions, benefits, and local gatherings. He also loved catfishing, and teaching his grandkids how to play Chinese Checkers. He was always the kind of neighbor and friend who would be the first to pitch in and help where help was needed. He was a member of the Chouteau Church of God. He passed from this life on Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at his home near Locust Grove. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Clara Saffell of the home; 3 sons, Floyd and wife Yvonne Saffell of Locust Grove, Danny Saffell of Tulsa, James and wife Margaret Saffell of Tampa, FL; daughter Mary Ann and husband Arlen Lowrance of Dallas; 2 brothers, Emmanuel and wife Joyce Saffell of Pryor, Marion and wife Fern Saffell of McKinleyville, CA; 3 sisters, Clara and husband Clifford McFarland of Locust Grove, Vera Sechler of T ulsa, Coradella and husband Clarence Aulman of Prairie Grove, AR; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Orville Saffell and Earl Saffell, and a sister, Silvia Teague. |
