Carmen L. Hirst, 1907 - 2003Services for Carmen L. Hirst, 96, of Locust Grove, were held Tuesday, January 21, 2003, at 2:00pm in the First Baptist Church, Locust Grove. Pastor Larry McDonald officiated, with interment following in Hogan Cemetery. Services were under the direction of the Locust Grove Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hirst was born January 14, 1907, in Kingston, Arkansas, to William Thomas and Macie (Price) Smith. As a young girl she came to the Locust Grove area, where she grew up and attended school. She later met Jack Hirst, and the couple were married on April 14, 1940 in Burley, Idaho. For 19 years the Hirsts were homesteaders in Heart Mountain near Powell, Wyoming, where they raised their family. They returned to Oklahoma after retirement and had lived in the Locust Grove area since 1979.

Mrs. Hirst enjoyed homesteading and being a dedicated homemaker. She loved her family dearly and they always came first. In her leisure time she enjoyed quilting, gardening vegetables and flowers, and sharing her harvest with friends. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Locust Grove.  She passed from this life on Saturday, January 18, 2003, at her home in Locust Grove.

She is survived by a son, Jack C. Hirst, Jr. of Locust Grove; daughter Gloria Hirst of Tulsa; brothers Wayne Smith of Pryor and J.B. and Alva Smith of Garland, Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband Jack Hirst, Sr.; sisters Irene Fey and Vernice Boatright; and three brothers, Earl, Raymond, and Hobart Smith.
