Services for
Vernie Marie Baker, 92, of Locust Grove, were held Friday, October 4,
2002, at 2pm in the First Baptist Church, Locust Grove. Rev. Travis
Martin officiated, with interment following in McClain Cemetery.
Services were under the direction of the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
Mrs. Baker was
born April 22, 1910, in Pine Log, Arkansas, to Amanda (Long) and
Zachariah Washington Yancy. She
grew up and attended school in the Tamaha area, and later married
Haskell J. Baker on December 31, 1933. She worked for many years as a
Deputy in the Cherokee County Assessor’s office. She retired in the
early 1960’s and came to the Locust Grove area. Her
favorite pastime was vegetable gardening, and she tilled and planted
her own garden up until the age of 91. She also enjoyed canning,
quilting, and embroidery work. She loved spending time with her family
and she always had fun playing ‘pitch’.
She passed from this life on Tuesday, October 1, 2002, in Tulsa, at the age of 92 years, 5 months, and 9 days. She is survived her son J.D. Baker and wife Glenda of Locust Grove; 3 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 7 step-great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Harold McMillan and Keith Hudson. She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband Haskell Baker; 5 brothers and 2 sisters; and her twin great-great-grandchildren, Kelsey Marie and Kyle John Sweeney. |
