| Services for William F. "Bill"
Sexton, 74, of Salina, were held Saturday, April 7, 2001,
at 10am in the Lakeview Baptist Church in Salina. Rev.
Bobby Belew officiated, with interment following in the
Bryan Chapel Cemetery at Boatman. Military graveside
rites were performed by the Grove Veterans Ritual Team.
Services were under the direction of the Locust Grove
Funeral Home. Mr. Sexton was born April 3, 1927, in Picher, to Forrest Joshua "Dick" and Cora (Cox) Sexton. He grew up and attended school in the Salina area, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 at the age of 17. He served overseas during World War II where, among many other battles, he fought at the landing of Iwo Jima in 1944. He was honorably discharged a Seaman Second Class on November 4, 1947. He worked for many years in Tulsa as an auto mechanic before he retired and came back to Salina in 1984. During his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, boating, and spending time outdoors. He especially loved catfishing, and he enjoyed hosting great fish fries and cooking for everyone. He always made sure nobody left hungry. He had many friends, and they all knew him as the type who would "give the shirt off his back" if they asked. He attended the Lakeview Baptist Church in Salina, where he was honored last year on Veterans Day for his service to his country, with a special commemorative plaque and fellowship. He passed from this life on Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the V.A. Medical Center in Muskogee. He is survived by his wife Cissie Rogers of the home; step-son Carl Brantley and wife Connie of Odessa, Missouri; sisters Marie Skivers and husband Clifford of Harrisonville, Missouri, and Bertha Lou Cochran of Tahlequah; nephew Jody Cochran of Tahlequah, grandchildren Sean and Aaron Brantley, and great-grandchildren Ian Stevenin and Andromeda Brantley. He was preceded in death by both parents; his wife of 32 years Ruth Sexton; and a nephew, Larry Gene Chavez. |
