Obituary for Clinton "Popie" Carnell Begley

Clinton “Popie” Carnell Begley was born October 17, 1938, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, to Floyd Woodrow and Lenora Dovey (Moore) Begley. He departed this life on Thursday, January 17, 2019, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, at the age of 80 years 3 months.

Popie was a graduate of the Central Sallisaw High School class of 1957. On January 31, 1959, in Claremore, Oklahoma, Clinton C. Begley and Patricia Sue England were united in marriage. Patricia preceded her husband in death on September 2, 2009. They had been married for over 49 years.

Popie was known as a hard worker. His philosophy was “man don’t work…man don’t eat”. He could have been a singer and traveled, but chose to keep working to provide for his family. Popie had managed grocery stores for over 15 years. He then went to work for and later retired from the Yellow Freight Truck Lines, where he was a truck driver for over 16 years.

Popie watched Dr. Charles Stanly’s program on television faithfully. When he was younger, he had coached little league baseball and Pop Warner football. Popie enjoyed playing his guitar and had even made several records in the past. He loved his family and friends dearly, and will be missed by everyone that knew and loved him.

Popie is survived by: 4 children: Todd F. Begly and wife Jennifer of the home, Tawalah Hovarter and husband Don of Yorba Linda, California, Trent Begley and wife Lisa of North Carolina, and Travis Begley and Adriane of North Carolina; 1 sister: Elaine Adams and husband Greg of Sallisaw, Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren: Cami Wessel and husband Nate, Trevor Hovarter and wife Gina, Madiline Painter and husband Allen, Amanda Hovarter, Rachel Durovey and husband Adam, Tyler Begley and wife Krista, Curtis Begley, Seth Begley, Hannah Begley, Eliese Begley, Tessa Begley, Emma Begley, and Andy Neel; 10 great grandchildren. Popie was preceded in death by: his parents, his wife; 1 sister: Jowanda Mozingo, and 1 brother: Clayton Begley.

Graveside services were held 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 21, 2019, at the Akins Cemetery in Atkins, near Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Reverend Rex Hendrickson officiated. Services were entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
