Obituary for James "Jim" Roy Finley

James “Jim” Roy Finley was born October 20, 1960 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to T. Roy and Jo Ann (Murphy) Finley. He departed this life on Saturday, February 2, 2019, in Locust Grove, Oklahoma at the age of 58. Jim grew up surrounded by parents and older sister Terri in Norman, Oklahoma and graduated as a Norman Tiger with the class of 1978. He went on to attend Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. Jim had a long history of working in sales where his honest nature and deep knowledge of business shone through, and for most of his life called Norman home.

For several years, Jim owned and operated Affordable Media Solutions. His passion for music made him an accomplished drummer and later teacher to many students. His drumming career had culminated prior to meeting Bonnie in a USO tour performing for troops stationed overseas across Eastern Asia including Japan, Korea, and Indonesia with his band “Sass”, which later became the “Caryl Mack Band”.

While performing with his band in Portland, Jim found the love of his life in Bonnie (then McLauchlin) and on October 5, 1986, they were married in the same city. They returned as a family to Jim’s home state, and from 1991 to 2013 lived in Norman where they raised their children, Taylor and Jay. He attended his childhood church at the Westside Church of Christ in Norman and was deeply devoted to his community, where he was a beloved father-figure who taught children’s “Bible Hour”. Jim was an advocate of family activities and coached his children in all kinds of little league sports. As they grew up, he was tirelessly there for them; once going as far as Europe to watch Jay compete in his championship soccer match, and making sure that Taylor was always supported as she masterfully coordinated theater shows.

For the past 5 years, Locust Grove has been their home where they raised horses as a therapeutic pastime and business. Jim cared for each animal endlessly, especially his favorite horse, DJ. While in Locust Grove, Jim attended the Eastside Church of Christ. Jim had a keen sense of humor and was an avid OU Sooners fan. Jim loved and is loved by his family and dogs. He and the memory of his life will be missed by those that knew him.

Jim is survived by his wife of over 32 years, Bonnie Finley and daughter, Taylor Finley of Norman, Oklahoma; son, Jay Finley of Locust Grove, Oklahoma; Mother Jo Ann Finley of Norman, Oklahoma; His sister Terri Cox and husband Bob, of Oklahoma City; Uncle Don and Aunt Rae Porter of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, T. Roy Finley; his paternal grandparents Roy and Geneva Finley; and his maternal grandparents James and Eulah Mae Murphy.

Funeral services were 2:00 P.M. on Friday, February 8, 2019, at the Westside Church of Christ in Norman, officiated by Dr. Trevor Lee Cox. Interment followed at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Norman. For those residing in Locust Grove that wish to pay tribute to Jim, a memorial service / celebration of life will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Locust Grove Funeral Home Chapel, in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, officiated by Keith Cagle. Services were entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
