Obituary for Virgil Lloyd Sitsler

Virgil Lloyd Sitsler was born January 11, 1925 in Kenwood, Oklahoma to Dan and Bertha Marie (Dollarhide) Sitsler. He departed this life on Friday, January 11, 2019, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, minutes after having his family sing “Happy Birthday” to him at midnight. He was 94 years old.

Growing up, Virgil attended school near Rose Prairie. Oklahoma. His life led him to obtaining a Master’s Degree from the School of Hard Knocks. Virgil lived most of his life in Mayes County, except for a short time that he spent in Oregon where he met Teresa Estelle Durant. On January 30, 1982, Virgil and Teresa were united in marriage. The couple would have been 37 years later this month.

Virgil had worked a variety of different jobs throughout his lifetime, and was known to be a very hard worker. During WWII, he was employed at the Powder Plant near Pryor. He had worked in construction for some time and was a member of several different construction unions. Virgil pioneered many roads and was also seen to be an entrepreneur. Over the last 40 years, Virgil became a skilled horse rancher and trainer. He had been a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, the Thoroughbred Association, and the Oklahoma Race Horse Association.

Virgil enjoyed dragging his field and constantly staying busy with work. He was a professional coon hunter and rock picker-upper. Virgil loved fishing and when able, spending time on the water in his boat. Above all, he loved and cherished every moment spent with his family and grandchildren. Virgil will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

Virgil is survived by: his wife: Teresa Sitsler of the home; 5 daughters: Jodi, Carolyn, Linda, Shirley, and Carla; 4 sons: Terry, Danny, Leon, and Richard; 86+ grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; 2 brothers: U.J. Sitsler and Harver Sitsler; 1 sister: Wanda Montgomery. Numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; 2 daughters: Sharon Kay Harbison and Bonnie Turner; 1 infant son: 1 grandson: Shelby Sitsler; 4 brothers: Fred Sitsler, Larry Sitsler, Jr., Jerry Sitsler, and David Sitsler; 3 sisters: Juanita Sitsler, Ruby Squirrel, and Wilma Jean Sitsler; his mother-in-law: Barbara Turner; and father-in-law: Eric Durant.

Funeral services were held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Exciting Southeast Baptist Church in Sportsman Acres near Pryor, Oklahoma. Pastor Rob Pierce and Brother Shawn Bates officiated. Interment followed at the Hogan Cemetery near Locust Grove, Oklahoma. Services were entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
